About Trees for Salinity

Our Mission

The Southern Indus Basin faces critical challenges including salinity, groundwater depletion, soil degradation, waterlogging, and climate change. These issues threaten the livelihoods of farmers in the region. The Trees for Salinity App is designed to address these challenges by bridging the gap between scientific research and practical solutions for salinity management.

What We Do

Our app equips farmers with actionable knowledge to improve agricultural productivity and resilience. By leveraging a robust database of salt-tolerant tree and shrub species tailored to each tehsil, we empower local communities to adapt to salinity-affected environments. The app promotes sustainable practices such as saline agroforestry, helping to create a balance between agriculture and the natural ecosystem.

Objectives

  • Knowledge Dissemination: Provide easy access to a database of salt-tolerant species tailored to local conditions.
  • Sustainable Farming Practices: Encourage afforestation and agroforestry suitable for local land and water conditions.
  • Climate Adaptation: Help communities integrate forestry solutions into agricultural practices.
  • Capacity Building: Enhance the resilience of farming communities through education and resources.
  • Policy Support: Provide reliable data to shape policies for sustainable land management.

Who We Are

The Trees for Salinity App is a part of the project titled “Transformation through adoption of trees and shrubs for salinity management in the Southern Indus Basin, Pakistan.” This initiative is funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and executed collaboratively by:

  • University of Canberra
  • Murdoch University
  • Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR)
  • Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC)
  • Mehran University of Engineering and Technology

Why It Matters

Salinity poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity and is often irreversible. However, with the right tools and knowledge, farmers can combat these challenges effectively. By using this app, farmers gain access to region-specific solutions that boost productivity, improve livelihoods, and promote environmental sustainability.
